Sea Vegetables were introduced to Americans as part of a macrobiotic lifestyle in the ‘60s. The question was always, “Why seaweed?” The answer was always, “To rejuvenate the nervous system. The trace minerals help grow new organ tissue.” Since then, much more has been learned about sea vegetable nourishment, including amazing benefits of unique polysaccharides.

Ancient cultures knew sea vegetables were valuable food. Sea vegetables provide rare, essential nutrients in proportions and configurations that greatly benefit humankind.

They provide nutrients not found in land foods. They are the best and only source, other than real sea salt, for essential trace minerals.

Seaweed is unique food in its preparation, taste, and value. Americans are learning its culinary delights and experiencing rewarding goodness.

Popular sea vegetables in the natural food world are nori, wakame, mekabu, kombu, arame, hiziki (hijiki), and dulse.

Long-Term Relationships

Eden Foods has supplied macrobiotic quality sea vegetables from Japan to the natural food industry since 1968. North Atlantic dulse was added in 2005. Eden Foods’ keen interest, due diligence, and accumulated knowledge about these vegetables ensures you the finest of each kind. Wild or cultivated, they are hand-harvested from environmentally protected areas designated as national natural treasures in Japan; dulse off the coast of Maine.

Eight different sea vegetables, some in multiple forms, are provided for a total of 13: Wakame Leaf and instant Wakame Flakes, Mekabu, Kombu, Agar Agar Bars and Agar Flakes, Arame, Whole Leaf Dulse and Dulse Flakes, Nori 10 sheet, Sushi Nori toasted 7 sheet, Nori Krinkles toasted, and flavored Nori Strips.

Nori, having the most delicious taste, is the best seller; but, not the most nutritious or rewarding.

Immune Enhancing Benefits

Academia interest in nutritional and tonic value of sea vegetables began in 1927 when Professor S. Kondo of Tohoku University, Japan, observed people regularly eating sea vegetables had particularly long and active lives. Laboratory studies have since identified specific antibacterial, antioxidant, and immunity enhancing properties of seaweeds, and have revealed the biochemistry of their unique nutritional components.

Fucoidan is a unique, beneficial polysaccharide in the cell walls of brown seaweed like EDEN Kombu, Mekabu, Wakame, Wakame Flakes, Arame, and Hiziki. Studies show fucoidan acts as an antioxidant, enhances the immune system and cellular health, supports heart, digestive and thyroid health, and protects the body against heavy metals. Fucoidan is a remarkable fat metabolizer. It accelerates the burning of fat. Within the fucoidan molecule is the sugar fucose (not fructose). Fucose is necessary for nerve cell communication to the brain, kidney function, reproductive health, skin hydration, and it fosters a vital metabolism. Mekabu, the flowering sprout of wakame (probably the most efficacious seaweed), is highly valued for its abundance of fucoidan. Mekabu’s slippery texture is from its rich fucoidan content.

Rare, Crucial Nutrients

Sea vegetables have profound positive impact on the body, our feelings, thinking, and overall well-being. They provide a complete spectrum of imperative trace minerals not found in land vegetables. Many essential trace minerals, completely missing in modern diets, are easily available in sea vegetables. According to Professor Moriteru Arasaki of the University of Tokyo, sea vegetables “… have more minerals than any other kind of food.” They contain every mineral essential for human health, plus an array of cleansing phytonutrients, fat metabolizing and eliminating polysaccharides, as well as the vitamins A, Bs, C, D, E, and K. They contain important selenium, often lacking in land vegetables due to mineral depleted soil and over processing. Sea vegetable minerals are in a chelated, colloidal form that is easy for us to assimilate. B12 is rare in the vegetable kingdom, but EDEN Nori provides between 30 and 40% of the daily value needed per serving. B12’s importance is accentuated for those not eating dairy, meat, and eggs.

Cleanse and Burn Fat

Another precious attribute of sea vegetables is a potent cleansing effect. This action is linked to alginic acid, a polysaccharide abundant in brown sea vegetables like EDEN Kombu, Wakame, Mekabu, Wakame Flakes, Arame, and Hiziki. We are polluted with heavy metals from poorly managed industry and agriculture. Barium, mercury, lead, cadmium, and radioactive strontium are just a few. Dr. Yukio Tanaka at McGill University in Montréal demonstrated alginic acid, abundant in sea vegetables but rare elsewhere, binds with heavy metals (including radionuclides) rendering them into forms that can be harmlessly eliminated from the body. Dr. Tanaka’s research shows how seaweed alginic acid attaches to and draws out the pollutants that we have accumulated, “… lowering the body’s burden.”

The amazing fat burning character of sea vegetables comes from fucoidan, alginic acid, and the minerals working in unison. The sugar fucose, part of the fucoidan, does wonders for our metabolism. It is a food allergy antigen, and only comes from sea vegetables.

The alginic acid in sea vegetables has been found by scientists at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England to cleanse and strengthen the intestines, improve absorption of nutrients and improve food energy management. Sea vegetables are fat free, low calorie, and low sodium.

Essential Iodine

The trace mineral iodine is abundant in all sea vegetables. It is crucial to metabolic functions, but is one of the least abundant minerals in land grown food. Land vegetables are not considered a dietary source of iodine. Broccoli and spinach, dairy and eggs have some; the latter due to iodine enriched animal feed.

Seawater is high in iodine. Sea vegetables and seafood are primary sources of this valuable mineral. Unlike land vegetables, iodine in sea vegetables is in a free form, not tightly chemically bound. Free iodine readily flows back and forth between the plant and the seawater. Unlike land vegetables, the iodine in sea vegetables and seafood is easily absorbed into our cells.

Purity Assured

In selecting sea vegetables, it is important to choose a pure, high grade that is suitable for human consumption. Choosing EDEN is the best way of doing this. Eden Foods completely avoids counterfeit sources from polluted waters. EDEN Sea Vegetables are world renown for their purity, superb taste, and remarkable nutritional value. Each one is prepared using the high art of old artisan methods.

Since Fukushima we have, and do, test all food from Japan for radionuclides. It is done redundantly; before it leaves there, and again after it arrives to us. Eden Foods is dependable and deliberate in looking after everything that is necessary to avoid them. Thousands of these tests have been performed by reputable third-party laboratories. Eden Foods and its Japan food suppliers continue to do exceptional, effective work in dealing with this, as it must be.

Just as toxic chemicals and GMOs did, Fukushima caused Eden Foods to create a reliable system to avoid radionuclide contaminated food.

Culinary Variety

EDEN Sea Vegetables are the finest selections in the world. They are suitable for the novice and the aficionado.

In becoming familiar with sea vegetables, start with the mildest, EDEN Agar Agar, Arame, and Nori. Try adding EDEN Instant Wakame Flakes to miso soup and make traditional dashi noodle broth with mild EDEN Kombu. Sprinkle EDEN Nori Krinkles and Spicy Nori Strips on noodles, rice, and salad. While EDEN Hiziki has the strongest taste, when soaked, blanched, rinsed, and sprinkled on fresh green salad with dressing, its taste is an enhancement. Healthy Soil grows healthy Plants  that nourish a healthy Environment and healthy People. They are inextricibly connected and dependant.

A hundred and twenty-five years ago, Rudolf Steiner wrote.

“In the future, we will eliminate the soul with medicine. Under the pretext of a ‘healthy point of view,’ there will be a vaccine by which the human body will be treated as soon as possible directly at birth, so that the human being cannot develop the thought of the existence of soul and Spirit.

To materialistic doctors, will be entrusted the task of removing the soul of humanity. As today, people are vaccinated against this disease or that disease, so in the future, children will be vaccinated with a substance that can be produced precisely in such a way that people, thanks to this vaccination, will be immune to being subjected to the “madness” of spiritual life. He would be extremely smart, but he would not develop a conscience, and that is the true goal of some materialistic circles. With such a vaccine, you can easily make the etheric body loose in the physical body.

Once the etheric body is detached, the relationship between the universe and the etheric body would become extremely unstable, and man would become an automaton, for the physical body of man must be polished on this Earth by spiritual will. So, the vaccine becomes a kind of arymanique force; man can no longer get rid of a given materialistic feeling. He becomes materialistic of constitution and can no longer rise to the spiritual.”       Rudolf Steiner  1861-1925
