Kamut® (kuh-MOOT) is an ancient grain native to Egypt and Asia Minor, and is often referred to as King Tut's Wheat. First discovered in the Nile Valley, it was introduced to America by a farmer in Montana in the 1940s, but nearly faded into oblivion until 1977 when Bob Quinn, a 4th generation organic farmer in Montana, remembered seeing King Tut's Wheat at a county fair in his youth. Mr. Quinn located a single pint of the grain, planted a crop, and named it Kamut, the Egyptian word for wheat meaning Soul of the Earth.
Kamut (Triticum turgidum or T. turanicum) is a rare, non-hybridized ancient grain. It is closely related to spelt, and a distant relative of durum wheat. Its large, plump golden kernels, or ‘berries’, are about three times the size of modern wheat berries. Not only does this grain have a deliciously nutty flavor, but it also has a higher nutritional value than its modern-day counterparts. Kamut's dense nutritional profile earns its reputation as high energy food. Many people with intolerance to other wheat find that they can thoroughly enjoy Kamut. According to the International Food Allergy Association (IFAA), “For most wheat sensitive people, Kamut grain can be an excellent substitute for common wheat.”
