Ready-to-eat cereals were once considered ‘healthy food’ and a fine way to enjoy essential whole grain. Since then these cereals have become saturated with cheap sugars and toxins, and long ago the delicious whole grain was replaced with distasteful, nutrient depleted flour. The chemically farmed grain, that already had diminished nutrient content, was over processed leaving just carbohydrates. Cereals became hollow calories that had lost their flavor. They tasted entirely different than the healthy ones. Ready-to-eat cereal became empty costumes of what had initially led to their popularity.
After the U.S. Civil War large numbers of people suffered from chronic digestive problems, a.k.a. dyspepsia, brought about by overconsumption of high protein, high fat, meat-centric diets. Doctors soon realized that American eating habits were causing disease and that eating patterns had to fundamentally improve. Sanitariums sprang up across the county promoting exercise and a restorative, mostly plant-based, diet. They hoped to move American culture toward a path leading to, and supportive of good health. Doctors and sanitarium employees of the time, e.g., Dr. James Caleb Jackson, Ellen White founder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, John and William Kellogg, Charles William Post, Dr. Alexander P. Anderson, and in Europe Dr. Maximilian Bircher-Benner developed many ready-to-eat whole grain cereals like granola, oatmeal, cereal flakes, puffed cereals, fine ground types like cream of wheat, and what became the European favorite - müesli.
However, in 1939 sugar sweetened chemically colored cereals arrived at the ‘super’market. Big moneyed radio and television marketing propelled their popularity, and children became the target of these cereal companies. A menagerie of cartoon characters, sport hero endorsements, trading cards, superheroes, talking animals, and prizes, in combination with sugar's addictive nature, led to Americans becoming completely hooked on these cereals by the mid-1950s.
Today, the majority of quick cooking and ready-to-eat cereals are overloaded with sugar and chemicals. Most are refined grain based; made of grain that is stripped of phytonutrients, beneficial fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Chemical colors, artificial flavors, preservatives, chemical fortification, agricultural chemical residues, and most recently genetically modified organisms, GMOs and their derivatives, pollute them.
