In the mid 1970s Eden played a key role in developing the organic certification processes and drafted the first American standards for 'field to shelf' organic food production. Eden was the first food manufacturer to speak out against irradiation, genetically engineered organisms (GEOs), and threats to organic standards. With the advent of national regulations of 'organic' by the USDA came the lobbyists on behalf of big business pleading for cheaper and easier ways. They want practices and contamination allowed that are contrary to the principles of organic agriculture and they have been successful. We encourage vigilance.
The GMO Trilogy is a newly released set featuring two DVDs and a CD produced by best selling author Jeffrey Smith that explain why genetically modified organisms (GMOs) put our health and environment at risk. The first DVD is an award-winning European documentary, Unnatural Selection. It features scientist and environmental activist Dr. Vandana Shiva, bioethicist and director of the International Center for Technology Assessment Andrew Kimbrell, Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser whose canola field was contaminated by Monsanto's Roundup Ready gene, and others. It reveals several of the harsh consequences of genetic engineering on three continents, including uncontrollable, self-replicating GM canola contamination in Canada, a failed GM cotton crop and farmer suicides in India, GM salmon that might wipe out natural fish populations, and deformed GM livestock created by the U.S. government.
The second DVD is the critically acclaimed Hidden Dangers in Kids' Meals. John Robbins, best selling author, says "Hidden Dangers pierces the myth that our government is protecting our food supply." Jeffrey Smith and a host of scientists explain that:
• The overwhelming consensus by FDA scientists was that GM foods are inherently hazardous and may contain poisons or allergens. They urged their superiors to require long-term safety studies, but were ignored by the political appointees including biotech giant Monsanto's former attorney who was placed in charge of FDA policy.
• GM-fed animals had damaged immune systems, stunted growth, organ lesions, sterility, high death rates, and increased mortality among offspring. Serious human problems have been reported as well.
• Children are most at risk from the potential dangers, but there are steps parents and schools can take to protect them.
The Trilogy also contains the audio CD You're Eating What?, a compelling talk by Jeffrey Smith about how biotech companies rigged research, hid health dangers, and pressured government regulators to approve GM food long before the science was ready. Craig Winters of The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Food calls it, "The most powerful presentation I have ever heard on the issue of genetically engineered foods."
If you haven't already, check out Jeffrey Smith's Seeds of Deception on Eden's web site; a captivating, profound, yet easy reading exposé of how biotech industry manipulation and political collusion has allowed hundreds of dangerous genetically engineered foods into our daily diet without our permission or even knowing it.
