Eden Organic Saffron Ribbons evoke the senses with golden color and a subtle spicy bite of the ancient herb saffron Crocus sativus linneaus in freshly milled organic durum flour. Golden amber durum wheat Triticum aestivum is the most sought after pasta making grain in the world, favored for its excellent nutrition and ability to create a smooth firm texture. This grain is USA high plains grown on family farms committed to building vital soil, cleaning the environment, and producing the safest most nutritious food.
Eden Organic Saffron Ribbons are small batch hand crafted at the Eden Organic Pasta Company, a Detroit landmark employing traditional pasta making techniques and vintage Italian equipment since 1923, and the first food production facility in North America to be third party certified organic. Organic golden amber durum wheat is freshly ground at our organic, AIB rated Superior, mill. The flour is slowly, thoroughly kneaded with pure water and Eden selected organic red bell pepper flakes, organic paprika powder, organic saffron powder, organic garlic powder, organic clove powder, organic pepper powder, and organic annatto powder. The ribbons are formed by a series of rollers that repeatedly laminate or fold the dough over itself. After the sheet of dough has been laminated eight times (creating a light and even texture), it is fed between stainless steel cutters to form the desired width, then cut to length. The ribbons go through an initial hot steam dryer to reduce moisture slowly, then to the drying room for 16 hours. The pasta is packaged in a reclosable box, with a delicious recipe and photo from Eden's kitchen printed on the back.
All Eden Organic Pasta is packaged in boxes made from recycled and recyclable paperboard, one of the most environmentally friendly packages available. According to the 100 percent Recycled Paperboard Alliance (RPA100.com), "Fourteen trees are saved for each ton of paperboard converted to 100 percent recycled paperboard. Trees are critical to the sequestration of CO2 (a greenhouse gas) in North America. For each ton of paperboard converted to 100 percent recycled paperboard, an equal amount of recovered fiber has been diverted from municipal landfills. Production of 100 percent recycled paperboard uses 50 percent less energy compared to virgin grades of paperboard, thus significantly reducing the greenhouse gases released into the environment."
Saffron is the most precious and most expensive spice in the world; the three stigmas of a particular crocus flower that are hand picked during a twelve hour period. More than 75,000 of these flowers are needed to produce one pound of saffron. Over 4,000 years of cultivation and use attest to its enduring popularity and therapeutic properties.
