Deep-Fried Black Soybean Mochi Puffs

Cook Time 10 minutes
Slice the mochi into thirds. Then slice each third in half. You should now have six equal-size pieces.
Heat 1" or 2" of oil in a small saucepan. When hot, but not smoking, add 3 mochi pieces. Deep-fry 3 to 5 minutes until the mochi puffs. Remove, drain, and repeat until all mochi is fried.
Wrap each mochi puff in a spicy nori strip, lightly dip in shoyu if desired, and eat immediately.
Yields: 6 mochi buffs
Variation: Serve with grated daikon or red radish to help digest the oil.
