8 October 1999
Eden sponsored an important event in our home state to raise awareness among Congress, media, and the public about the unlabeled proliferation of genetically engineered organisms (GEOs) in our food supply.
The Michigan Summit on the Hazards of Genetically Engineered Foods was held Friday, 8 October in Troy, Michigan. The summit was free and open to the public.
Eden president Michael Potter represented the food industry on a panel that included leaders in science, agriculture, consumer rights, and the media. Congressman David E. Bonior (U.S. House of Representatives, 10th District, D-Michigan) was one of the special guest speakers.
Eden supports events such as the Michigan Summit as part of ongoing, extensive action to ensure our customers' right to choose the purest food.
An organic industry pioneer since 1968, Eden foresaw the trend to commercialize genetically engineered food in 1993, and established the first GEO-free policies, procedures, and documentation. Since then, Eden has worked with growers to help ensure GEO-free soil and crops, and with suppliers to ensure a reliable source of GEO-free ingredients. Eden routinely tests for GEOs, including on-site testing of each delivery of soybeans. In 1998 the New York Times tested for the presence of GEOs in 11 soy- and corn-based foods, and the only food that tested negative was Eden's soy milk, Edensoy.
"You can depend upon Eden to be diligent in avoiding any aspect of the commercialization of genetically engineered food," says Mr. Potter. "We object to the introduction of these foods for human consumption in any manner, for any reason. We are fundamentally opposed to these foods for moral, ethical, and practical reasons."
"Eden is pleased to support the Michigan Summit, and we thank Congressman Bonior, Mothers for Natural Law, panelists and guests, for joining together in defense of our environment, health, and freedom of choice."
